Some provincial recognition for a Dresden area landmark.
The Ontario Black History society is bestowing Uncle Tom’s Cabin with the Harriet Tubman Award.
Site Manager, Steven Cook says it’s an honour to be mentioned in the same breath as past winners.
“Harriet Tubman the most famous conductor on the underground railroad and we were given it for our dedication to black history preservation for the programming we do at Uncle Tom’s Cabin and for the stewardship of the Ontario Heritage Site and running the site,” says Cook. “Last year at the site we basically started with a clean slate we redid the gallery and the theatre and maintenance out back, replacing windows out back in the church that had deteriorated.”
The award coincides with the start of Black History Month today and the Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society and Black Mecca Museum is offering the opportunity to learn more about Viola Desmond.
