Expect to see a jam packed meeting tonight in Wallaceburg to discuss the Base Line Bridge tonight.
The municipality is holding a meeting at the service centre from starting at 5:30pm to discuss potentially removing the swing capabilities of the bridge.
Chris Thibert, Director of Engineering and Transportation Services says it’s such an important issue that everybody needs to make their thoughts known.
“That’s why we really want to make sure we reached out to the WAMBO committee, we reached out to the BIA, we have the councillors on board to attend,” Thibert says.
Some, like former Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Wesley, believe changing the bridge to a stationary structure is short-sighted.
“Rather than quote statistics on how many times it opened last year you need to look at a time when larger boats came into our basin for better and more realistic numbers and how often it would open based on future growth and tourism,” Wesley says in an emailed statement. “Once it no longer opens you have shut the door forever on certain boats being able to visit our downtown.”
Anyone who is unable to attend tonight’s meeting can submit their comments to ckinfo@chatham-kent.ca or calling the Civic Centre at 519-360-1998.
All of the feedback gathered from the public and local stakeholders will be compiled into a report to be presented to council on March 2nd.
