Blenheim Schools Placed on Lockdown

Chatham-Kent Police continue to investigate after a man was spotted carrying a suspected gun in Blenheim.

Officers responded to the Chatham Street South area late this morning about a man in possession of a long gun.

Blenheim District High School, Harwich Raleigh Public School, and W.J. Baird Public School were placed under lockdown as a precaution with officers at each school.

The accused was found, and police were able to confirm the firearm involved was a BB gun.

Officials with the Lambton Kent District School Board say the lockdown was lifted after police confirmed there was no risk to staff or students.

The safety and well-being of students and staff remain the highest priority,” LKDSB Public Relations Officer Caress Lee said in an emailed statement. “School administrators are grateful for the swift response and guidance provided by Chatham-Kent Police Service, as well as the cooperation of students, staff, families, and the broader community.”

There’s no word yet on whether any charges have been laid, but authorities say there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
