Another step forward for a new battery storage facility in Tilbury.
Officials with Boralex say the project, in partnership with Walpole Island First Nation, has completed the commissioning process, ensuring all systems and components are installed properly and operating safely and efficiently.
The facility, first announced in September 2024, is expected to store 80 megawatts of energy, which is equivalent to power 80,000 homes.
The battery storage facility has also been renamed as Sanjgon Battery Energy Storage. The term “Sanjgon,” derived from the Nishnaabemwin language, evokes the traditional storage practices used by Walpole island families.
“The Sanjgon Battery Energy Storage facility marks a significant step toward a cleaner, more reliable energy future,” said Leela Thomas, Chief of Walpole Island First Nation in a news release. “Walpole Island First Nation values this partnership with Boralex, working together to advance sustainable solutions that benefit our communities for generations to come.”
Officials say the project reflects the company’s commitment to respectful, long-term partnerships with Indigenous and local communities.
