Allegedly skipping out on his court date has led to additional charges for a Chatham man accused of breaking into a Chatham-Kent residence.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service said the 55-year-old was initially arrested in connection with a residential break-and-enter on August 6, 2024, and the theft of property valued at around $67,000. The accused was arrested again on October 9, 2024 for allegedly violating his release conditions by not abiding by his imposed curfew.
As per the terms of his release, the accused was scheduled to answer the charges in court on February 20, 2025. However, when he failed to appear, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.
Officers were able to locate and arrest the 55-year-old for a third time on Thursday just before 9:30 a.m., when he attended the Ontario Court of Justice on Grand Avenue West in Chatham.
The accused now faces charges of break-and-enter, theft over $5,000, theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property, trafficking stolen property under $5,000, and two counts of failing to comply with a release order.
He has since been released from custody with another court date scheduled in May.
