Tonight marks the start of municipal budget deliberations at the Civic Centre.

Wallaceburg councillor Carmen McGregor says the proposed tax hike currently sits between 1.7% and 2.03%, pending provincial funding, but that likely won’t be the final number.

“That’s what they’re coming to us with the budget, that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re not going to find efficiencies and change those numbers,” McGregor says. “I know there’s a lot of eager councillors, and some of the new councillors really digging into this budget, so there’s going to be a lot of questioning and we’re going to do our best to get that (proposed tax increase) lowered.”

Three dates have been set aside for deliberations – tonight, tomorrow, and February 5th, with the potential to continue on the 6th and 7th if need be.

All meetings run from 6-10pm at the Civic Centre.
