Buxton Community To ‘Reunite’ For Homecoming Weekend

After two years of pandemic-related restrictions, the annual Buxton Homecoming Weekend is returning to the historic settlement.

This weekend celebration will mark the 99th homecoming event in Buxton over four days from September 2-5. The homecoming event will feature a blend of African Canadian heritage, family reunions, and children’s activities, along with small-town hospitality.

The 2020 homecoming was restricted to an online event due to the pandemic and while circumstances allowed for some limited in-person events in 2021, organizers are excited to be returning to a full in-person event this year.

With the return to an in-person celebration, the planning committee said it was inspired by select lyrics from “Reunited and It Feels so Good,” the R and B hit by Peaches and Herb.

Buxton Homecoming Weekend started in 1924 as a one-day reunion for former slaves who came to Canada as part of the Underground Railroad. It has since evolved into a full weekend celebration.
