A provincial by-election has officially been called in Lambton-Kent-Middlesex to fill the seat left empty by former MPP Monte McNaughton.

Premier Doug Ford’s office announced on Wednesday that a writ has been issued under Section 9.1 of the Election Act for the by-election, with voting set to take place on May 2.

Under the Election Act, elections must be called on a Wednesday and held the fifth Thursday after the date of the issue of the writ.

The seat for the Lambton-Kent-Middlesex riding has been vacant since October 2023, after former MPP McNaughton resigned to take a job in the private sector.

Chatham-Kent Councillor Steve Pinsonneault is running as the Progressive Conservative candidate in the by-election against Alvinston resident Kathryn Shailer for the NDP, and third-term Lucan mayor Cathy Burghardt-Jesson who is running for the Liberals. Keith Benn, a consultant and former geology professor from Port Lambton, is representing the New Blue Party, while Andraena Tilgner, a registered respiratory therapist, will represent the Green Party.
