After making a bid to jump to the NFL with the Chicago Bears, Chatham, Ontario’s Andy Fantuz has been cut by the Bears.
Fantuz, last year’s Most Outstanding Canadian with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, was signed to a contract by the NFL’s Chicago Bears just prior to the NFL lockout.
As camp progressed however, other receivers were signed, and stood out, prompting Andy Fantuz’ slide down the depth chart, and eventual release by the team Friday along with 13 other players. The Bears still must cut 13 more players by Saturday at 5pm to get down to their 53 man roster.
Fantuz played 4 preseason games with the Chicago Bears, only being targeted by the Bears’ offensive scheme twice in those four games. Fantuz made both catches, pick up 6-yards and 13-yards. In total however, Fantuz saw minimal field time.
Now, Fantuz will face the choice of returning to the CFL, where his rights are still owned by the Saskatchewan Roughriders, or going through tryouts with other NFL teams. The Roughriders, who are currently 1-7 without their star receiver, will undoubtedly welcome Andy Fantuz back.
Considering, however, Fantuz had tryouts and contract offers from several NFL teams heading into the season, there will likely still be interest within the NFL for teams trying to bolster their offensive depth.
