While plans to rebrand Chatham’s downtown mall through a naming contest were ultimately scrapped, one of the submissions is being recognized by the organizers.
The group behind the One Hundred King redevelopment project has awarded $5,000 worth of gift certificates to Sheri N. and Joey K., who both submitted the name “King Square.”
In the summer of 2024, 100 King Street CK Holdings Inc., which owns the Downtown Chatham Centre (DCC), announced plans to redevelop the Downtown Chatham Centre. The building owners also launched a contest to give community members the chance to submit a new name for the space. The contest also promised a grand prize of a trip for two on a private jet.
However, in the fall of 2024, the owners announced that the new space will be officially named One Hundred King, which they said best encapsulates the spirit and purpose of the space.
“We were thrilled by the overwhelming response from our residents. Your creative and thoughtful name submissions played a key role in shaping this exciting development, and we sincerely thank everyone who participated,” the group said in a news release. “As promised, we wanted to recognize and pay tribute to the other great name ideas we received from the community.”
According to 100 King Street CK Holdings, all of the necessary permits have now been obtained to move forward with the building’s construction plans. Restoration of the mall is expected to begin in the coming months with the arrival of warmer weather. In the meantime, work on the mall parking garage and other improvements to the surrounding area are expected to continue.
