A mayoral hopeful wants to bring council meetings to the rural communities.

Ward 6 councillor and mayoral candidate Darrin Canniff is bringing forward a motion to hold four council meetings every year, in addition to regular scheduled meetings in Chatham, in a different community of Chatham-Kent.

“We need to bring Chatham-Kent together. One of the things that’s out there significantly is that people aren’t feeling like they are part of Chatham-Kent. They’re not feeling part of governance. It’s a pretty simple fix – let’s put some meetings out there on a regular basis,” says Canniff. “I’d also like to see that if the meeting is in Wallaceburg, we’d have an [additional] hour session on Wallaceburg. People from the community can talk about it, the wonderful things that are there, and their issues, so the rest of council can understand. It’s a great way of bringing Chatham-Kent together”

Canniff says he doesn’t expect this idea to have significant costs, and it would be a great way for councillors to visit the smaller towns.

Council will discuss his motion in November.
