Paddlers compete during the Sydenham River Canoe and Kayak Race in 2017.

For the first time in five years, canoes and kayaks returned to the Sydenham River in support of conservation education.

Over 70 canoe and kayak enthusiasts turned out for the Sydenham River Canoe and Kayak Race on Sunday, which was the first to be held since 2017. The event has been repeatedly cancelled in recent years due to unsafe water levels and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are so happy that the event could go forward this year,” said Melissa Levi, race coordinator and education coordinator for the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority. “It was a great day, and I think everyone enjoyed getting out on the water.”

The race on Sunday featured 11 different race classes and three different race lengths.

The event raised over $5,000 for conservation education programs through the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority. Emery Huszka and Jerry Fiddler were also named the top fundraisers.
