Paddlers compete during the Sydenham River Canoe and Kayak Race in 2017.

A local canoe and kayak race in support of conservation education is returning to the Sydenham River later this month.

The Sydenham River Canoe and Kayak Race will take place on April 28, with a rain date scheduled for May 5.

The races begin at Mosside Road just west of County Road 79 and end at the Shetland Conservation Area on Lambton County Road 2.

Organized by the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority, the annual race is recognized by the Ontario Marathon Canoe Kayak Racing Association and serves as a fundraiser to support conservation education programs within the St. Clair region watershed.

The deadline for online registration is April 24. In-person registration will take place on the morning of the race. Those participating must provide their own canoe or kayak equipped with a whistle, bailer, and 50 feet of rope.
