Police are crediting the municipality’s CCTV surveillance system for helping to identify an assault suspect and locate a missing person.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers responded to a serious assault in Chatham on April 1 and quickly turned to CCTV footage to help identify a suspect. Through information provided by the victim, investigators used the footage to identify a vehicle and licence plate connected to a suspect, who was also identified.
“Without the use of this technology, the offender would have likely remained unidentified for an extended period, relying solely on traditional investigative methods,” police said in a news release.
Police have not released any further information about the incident and it is unknown if the suspect has been apprehended.
Also on April 1, officers were able to review CCTV footage from downtown Dresden to learn the travel path of a missing youth. The youth was ultimately located successfully.
“These two investigations clearly demonstrated the value of CCTV technology as an essential tool in modern policing,” police said. “By enhancing the ability to gather timely and accurate information, the system helps officers respond more effectively and keep the community safe.”
