Today marks the start of Black History Month.

Officials with the Buxton National Historic Site and Museum, Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society and Black Mecca Museum, and the Josiah Henson Museum of African Canadian History are working together to present a number of events and activities throughout the month.

A flag raising ceremony kicks things off at the Civic Centre at noon today.

A special story time is being held at the Chatham-Kent Public Library the morning of February 8th; The inaugural Black Excellence Awards will be handed out at the Retro Suites Hotel on February 10th; February 27th marks a trivia night at Red Barn Brewing in partnership with Buxton’s Next Generation; and the Color Purple will be shown at the Capitol Theatre at 2pm and 7pm on February 28th.

Local residents are also encouraged to follow the three Black historical sites in Chatham-Kent, follow them on social media, and learn more about the area’s place in Black history.
