Celebrating Black Lives Through Art and Community

The Thames Art Gallery is calling on area residents to help create a community art quilt to celebrate Black History Month.

The idea is to piece together photographs of as many pieces of art as possible – whether written word, paintings, sketches, on any media.

“Almost nine months after George Floyd’s death, the rise of Black Lives Matter, and CK’s own peaceful march down King Street, we want to keep carrying it forward,” says gallery curator Phil Vanderwall. “Creativity can help us to confront and overcome our challenges. Art can help us create the world we want to live in and what better way to focus our energies than to join together as a community and participate in a positive vision for 2021?”

Following the theme “Celebrating Black Lives” participants are asked to email a photo of their work to the gallery at [email protected]. The final product will be put on display in the front window at ARTSpace for the month of February.

For every participating artist, a donation will be made to support distribution of the film “The North Star: Finding Black Mecca,” which focuses on the history of the Black community in Chatham-Kent.
