Over 175 people took part in a recent celebration of local architectural history.

Saturday, February 21 marked Heritage Day in Chatham-Kent, filled with family-friendly events and the Mayor’s Heritage Awards ceremony at Retro Suites in Chatham.

Five awards were handed out with several properties on Brown Street in Dresden winning the Industrial and Commercial Award, the Bethel Church on River Line in Chatham taking the Rural and Agriculture Award, and the Adaptive Reuse Award going to the Chatham Armouries.

A historic home on St. George Street North in Dresden won both the Residential Preservation and Restoration Award and People’s Choice.

“It was wonderful to see the community come together to celebrate local heritage” said Mayor Darrin Canniff in a news release.

“Our community is fortunate to have such a rich and diverse collection of historic properties that reflect the evolution of Chatham‑Kent. Without continued commitment to protecting these irreplaceable landmarks, we risk losing site of the stories, craftsmanship, and historical events that have shaped who we are today and link future generations to those who came before.”
