Lake Erie will be in the social media spotlight this week as part of an annual awareness campaign.

On Tuesday, August 27, social media users are invited to share their photos and love for Lake Erie to call for action to protect the lake.

Residents are invited to share their Lake Erie stories and photos on social media with the hashtag #WeAreLakeErie.

Western Lake Erie continues to be hit by algae blooms, which can be toxic, affecting drinking water and complex ecosystems.

Earlier this summer, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced its 2024 Lake Erie algae bloom forecast. This summer’s bloom was forecast to be moderate to larger-than-moderate, and is already measuring nearly 1500km2.

The rally, using the hashtag #WeAreLakeErie was started in 2017 by three Canadian environmental groups: Environmental Defence Canada, Canadian Freshwater Alliance, and Freshwater Future Canada.
