Fans packed the stands at Fergie Jenkins Field in Chatham for last night’s annual Challenger Baseball season finale.

The teams are made up of clients from the Chatham-Kent Children’s Treatment Centre.

Coach Alison Monroe says it’s not that different than any other game.

“The Challenger Baseball program at the Treatment Centre is a regular baseball program where each child is paired one-to-one with a buddy,” Monroe explains. “The only two exceptions to the rules is everyone goes up to bat and there are no outs.”

About 25 players with a range of abilities hit the field once a week over the course of the season.

The program is run in partnership with the Chatham Minor Baseball Association.

Monroe says the smiles on the kids’ faces make all the work worthwhile.
