Challenges and Opportunities in Agriculture in the New Year

Chatham-Kent’s agriculture industry faces some interesting twists and turns as we head into the new year.

Jay Cunningham, president of the Kent Federation of Agriculture, says 2022 carries with it some of the challenges of the past year.

“As far as the business part of it goes, we’re going to see a change in our input costs going into 2022, combined with this emphasis on land use planning and how we’re all going to use and take care of our limited resources I think are going to be some pretty big focuses for 2022.”

Cunningham says working partnerships are key.

“The world is not getting any bigger, I think it’s getting smaller,” Cunningham says. “Having good, strategic, functioning partnerships art all levels is going to be critical, and that’s going to be a big focus and big emphasis for the KFA going forward.”

Cunningham says 2022 holds a number of unique opportunities for the organization, including a program working with Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services focusing on grain entrapment rescue equipment. The agriculture industry will likely also weigh heavily in elections, municipally and provincially, in the coming year.
