More changes are coming to the municipality’s waste collection policies.

Officials say Chatham-Kent will be transitioning to a paper bag mandate for curbside leaf and yard collections.

Some communities, including the Bate Subdivision, Blenheim, Bothwell, Thamesville, Ridgetown and Tilbury are currently able to put out their yard waste in clear bags. As of January 1st, 2025, residents will have to use paper bags. In the meantime, plastic bags will still be collected, but property owners are encouraged to make the switch sooner than later.

Officials say paper bags reduce environmental impact by minimizing plastic waste and promote sustainability by encouraging the use of biodegradable materials, and paper bags are more easily recyclable and compostable, offering an eco-friendlier option.
