Chatham Beach Volleyball is serving up a proposal to expand its operation.

In a motion going before council Monday night, Chatham Beach Volleyball Inc. is asking to lease a section of land from the Municipality of Chatham-Kent located on Courthouse Lane behind the Chatham YMCA. Administration is proposing an annual rental rate of $6,000 with annual inflationary increases of three per cent for ten years.

The ten-year lease would be automatically renewable for two additional five-year terms unless terminated by either party. The agreement would generate approximately $68,780 in total lease revenue and reduce the municipality’s grass cutting expenses by approximately $1,461 annually.

Chatham Beach Volleyball has tripled its registration numbers since starting in 2023 and has outgrown its current location. A draft site plan proposes the development of up to eight beach volleyball courts where the group would run youth development programs, adult leagues and tournaments. The proposal aligns with the municipality’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan.

Robert Pollock, CK’s Director of Parks, Recreation and Facilities, says the group will be the exclusive primary user of the beach volleyball courts and will be responsible for “all costs related to the construction, ongoing maintenance, and any modifications or alterations requested with respect to the leased parcel and beach volleyball courts.”
