Quite a coup for an affordable housing project in Chatham-Kent.
The Brickworks Community development has been named as one of 10 finalists for this year’s David Suzuki Future Ground prize.
30 small homes are planned for a parcel of land between Taylor Avenue and Memory Lane, just off Grand Avenue East in Chatham, with construction slated to begin as early as next fall.
It’s the first project for the Opportunity Villages Community Land Trust, a new federally registered non-profit group established to help individuals and families transition from rental accommodation to home ownership.
“Despite our acknowledgment of increased costs of building materials and other challenges experienced in moving forward during a pandemic, our volunteer team continues to be motivated and are certainly inspired by this nomination,” says OVCLT Board President, Steve Pratt.
There were 135 entries for the Future Ground awards – the grand prize is $5000, there’s also a People’s Choice award worth $2500.
Winners are selected through online voting, which runs June 1st to the 15th.
