A report is expected back to council this fall as municipal officials mull over the proposed relocation of downtown Chatham’s main fire station.
Administration is recommending Station #1 be moved to the former St. Ursula School property on Lacroix Street in Chatham, citing the large property size, it being municipally owned, and demolition of the existing building as contributing factors.
Municipal staff’s report, expected in September, will include the move and retaining a consultant to undertake creating a site plan and preliminary design of the building. Public consultation will be included as part of the process for the development of the site plan.
The relocation of Chatham’s primary fire hall has been in development since June 2024 as part of CK’s 10-year Fire Master Plan. Staff have been exploring relocation options to ensure Station #1 can continue to provide effective and efficient fire protection across the growing municipality.
Council voted 16 to 3 in favour of the report with councillors Michael Bondy, Amy Finn, and Alysson Storey voting in opposition.
Construction is anticipated to start after the completion of the Chatham-Kent Community Hub sometime in 2027/28.
