Police are investigating following a brief lockdown at a Chatham high school.

In a letter to parents, Ursuline College Principal Ray Power said several unknown young adults attended the high school in Chatham on Tuesday during senior lunch and refused to leave.

“Due to the unknown reason for their presence on the property and their unwillingness to cooperate with a request from our staff to leave the immediate area, a decision was made to contact CK Police Services,” Power said in the letter.

When Chatham-Kent police officers were at the school, administration declared a “hold and secure” which was then lifted at around 1:40 p.m.

When a “hold and secure” is declared, all external doors are locked and monitored by staff. Only staff and students, who may be outside at the time, are permitted to enter.  Students remain in their classrooms and carry on with the day as normal.

Power said police are continuing to investigate the incident.

No further information has been released and officials with the St. Clair Catholic District School Board have said no further comment will be provided at this time.
