Two busy intersections in Chatham are being credited as the most collision-prone in the municipality.
According to an annual report from the Chatham-Kent Police Service, the intersections of Keil Drive and Richmond Street, and Lacroix Street and Richmond Street are tied for the highest number of collisions in Chatham-Kent, with 14 crashes each in 2021.
The intersection of Grand Avenue West and Keil Drive North was the next highest with officers responding to 10 collisions last year.
Police said they track collision locations to inform decisions on enforcement and education.
According to the annual report, Chatham-Kent police responded to a total of 1,668 collisions in 2021, an increase of only seven compared to the prior year. Of those collisions, 10 resulted in fatalities, and eight resulted in life-threatening injuries.
Alcohol or drugs were a factor in 69 collisions last year. As well, 36 collisions involved pedestrians and another 28 involved cyclists.
The Traffic Management Unit laid a total of 1,712 charges in 2021, which represented 46 per cent of all charges laid by the Chatham-Kent Police Service.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service conducted 35 RIDE programs last year resulting in 4,208 vehicles being stopped. A total of 40 roadside tests were conducted with seven licence suspensions issued. Officers also issued one impaired driving charge and one criminal charge during the RIDE programs. A total of 13 Provincial Offence Notice Notices were also issued.
