Local residents are being invited to grab their camera and explore nature as part of a global challenge.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has teamed up with the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority, St. Clair Region Conservation Authority, and NatureCK for the City Nature Challenge BioBlitz.

The challenge runs April 24 through May 10, and is organized by the California Academy of Sciences and the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, aims to get citizen scientists out exploring, documenting, and identifying nature in their local communities.

The first phase of the BioBlitz runs April 24 – 27, inviting residents to explore their backyard, a nearby park, or their favourite trail and take photos of any wild animals, plants or fungi they might see. Then from April 28 through May 10, photos can be uploaded through the iNaturalist app or website and add any identifications or observations.

A number of community events are being planned during the challenge, including PA Day activities for kids on April 24 and a community gathering in Chatham’s Tecumseh Park on April 26.

All events are family friendly. Outdoor events will run rain or shine, but will be cancelled in case of extreme weather.
