Chatham-Kent arenas will reopen in the next couple of weeks.

Chatham-Kent councillor Melissa Harrigan brought forward a successful motion at this week’s council meeting to have arena operations revert back to service levels that the municipality had in place prior to closing due to COVID-19 back in March.

Harrigan says user groups wanted answers about booking time in the upcoming season and wanted some clarity about whether local arenas will be open.

“Many of the sports seasons that are able to operate with the COVID restrictions in place are looking to start their time on the ice as soon as yesterday,” Harrigan says.

There are 10 public rinks around Chatham-Kent.

Councillors had concerns that if Chatham-Kent arenas were not able to open soon, hockey players and skaters would go to neighbouring communities to use their arenas.

Chatham-Kent administration will have a report in December on arena operations and service levels.
