Chatham-Kent is joining a growing list of cities that are banning the sale of non-rescue animals in pet stores.

Councillor Brock McGregor says this will help put a stop to puppy mills and other irresponsible practices.

We know that other communities have taken this step in reducing the availability of animals produced by irresponsible breeders,” the Ward Six Councillor says. “I’m glad Chatham-Kent can add their name to that list of communities.”

He says now that his motion has passed, the Municipality’s legal team will make the amendment to the Responsible Animal Ownership By-Law.

“Essentially what we’re doing is giving a direction of what we want amended in that bylaw,” McGregor says. “Exact legal wording will follow and we’ll see that once we get through the reading of the bylaws.”

Toronto and Ottawa have passed similar by-laws.
