As Canada prepares to host the FIFA World Cup this summer, Chatham-Kent council will vote on whether to position the municipality as a potential stop on the FIFA Canada’s Caravan tour.
The Taste of Chatham-Kent (TOCK) committee is asking council to approve up to $75,000, covering a $50,000 activation fee and up to $25,000 in event expenses, funded through the Together CK reserve, in anticipation that Chatham-Kent may be selected as a tour stop.
In a letter of intent to CK Chief Administrative Officer Michael Duben, FIFA World Cup Chief Tournament Officer Peter Montopoli confirmed the organization’s intent to collaborate with Chatham-Kent as a potential stop on the tour.
Montopoli cites the municipality’s enthusiasm for the sport as a reason CK is a strong candidate, writing, “we believe your community would be able to deliver a memorable and inclusive FIFA World Cup 26™ experience to both local residents and visitors.”
The FIFA Canada Caravan will visit select cities across the country, including 15 locations in Ontario, during the World Cup, which runs from June 11 to July 19. TOCK hopes to host the event in Tecumseh Park, offering soccer-themed activities, live entertainment, and a screening of a FIFA World Cup 26™ match.
If council approves the motion, Chatham-Kent will be prepared to accept a tour stop if selected, with the Community Culture & Connections division coordinating municipal and community support for both TOCK and the FIFA Canada’s Caravan event.
