Trade concerns are the reason a CK councillor wants a federal election sooner rather than later.
“We have a new Prime Minister who was not elected by Canadians at large but the Liberal Party only,” stated Ward 2 Councillor Ryan Doyle.
“Therefore it be resolved that administration send a letter to the federal government on behalf of council no later than April 11 asking for them to call a federal election as soon as possible.”
Unlike the American electoral system, Canadians do not vote for the head of government. Even after the resignation of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the Liberal Party of Canada remains the governing party until the next federal election, and the party’s leader holds the Prime Minister’s seat.
If the motion is passed at the April 7 meeting, Doyle wants to urge other municipalities to follow suit.
After a landslide victory in the Liberal leadership race, Mark Carney was sworn into office on Friday March 14, becoming Canada’s 24th Prime Minister. However, he does not hold a seat in the House of Commons.
While he has made no public comment on the issue, it’s widely expected Carney will call an election before Parliament’s scheduled return on March 24.
As it stands, the next federal election is planned for October 20, 2025.
