Chatham-Kent’s Fire and Paramedic Chief is encouraging people of all applicants to consider a career in emergency services.
Bob Crawford says historically, the fire department has been largely male and Caucasian.
“Over the years, we’ve continued to talk about the need to be a more diverse community and the strength that diversity brings to a community,” Crawford says. “So how do you do that? How do you attract and retain a workforce that’s inclusive instead of exclusive?”
Crawford says they are hiring for several positions, including assistant fire chief, two training officers, and a pool of 10-20 firefighters.
“We have a wonderful fire service, very active in our community, but we could improve,” he says. “One of the ways I want to focus on that as we go through recruitment is to encourage folks to come forward, take a look at what’s required to do the job, and maybe consider competing for one of our positions.”
Experience is necessary, and job postings can be found online.
