Chatham-Kent fire officials are sounding the alarm on the potential hazards posed by lithium-ion batteries.
With fires caused by lithium-ion battery-powered devices increasing across North America at an alarming rate, Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue said local residents should take precautions to avoid a potentially tragic situation.
Assistant Chief Sean McRoberts said lithium-ion batteries are can be found in common everyday items such as smart devices, tooth brushes, children’s toys, and e-bikes. If not used correctly, or if damaged, these batteries can catch on fire or explode.
“The issue with lithium-ion batteries is that they burn rapidly at high temperatures, they release toxic gas and smoke as a byproduct when they burn,” he said.
McRoberts said there are several ways to prevent lithium-ion batteries from exploding in the household, such as reading the manufacturer instructions to know the proper use and safety precautions; always replace lithium-ion batteries with the same or compatible battery; and never charge a lithium-ion battery or a charge cord if it’s been compromised in any way, such as dents or punctures.
“We also recommend never charging on a soft surface. A lot of people get into the habit where they may charge their phone while they sleep on their bed. Do not do that whatsoever. A hard surface is always best,” said McRoberts “And never charge in front of an exit or stairwell.”
If suspect there is something may be wrong with the battery, McRoberts said you should listen for unusual noises and be mindful of odd smells.
“If you do come across something like that, dispose of it. Stop charging and dispose of it immediately,” he said.
