Residents are invited to attend a community open house to learn more about the ongoing efforts to detect and mitigate potential gas emissions in downtown Wheatley.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is holding the meeting at the Wheatley Village Resource Centre on Thursday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Municipal representatives and consultants will be in attendance to go over technical details and answer any questions.

Preparations recently began in downtown Wheatley for the next round of excavation near the site of the 2021 gas explosion in order to confirm or rule out the presence of any additional gas or water wells in the area. Crews will also abe removing the remaining foundations of recently demolished buildings.

A drone capable of detecting methane emissions will also be used to survey the town and surrounding rural areas before and after the excavation work.
