Homelessness in Chatham-Kent is on the rise, despite ongoing efforts by the municipality.
A report prepared by Jennifer Crowell, Manager of Housing Services, will be presented to council tonight, showing that in 2024, an average of 33 people per month entered the homeless system, while only 19 people per month exited.
“Despite our best efforts, this is due to various complex factors that result in challenges to move individuals out of the system faster than seeing new individuals enter,” Crowell wrote.
The net increase of 14 people per month highlights that homelessness continues to grow in the community. Crowell also highlighted the shift from the former Victoria Park Place shelter to a new transitional cabin project, which opened earlier this month, shifting focus toward helping individuals prepare for long-term housing.
The report also notes that 1,396 households are currently on the centralized waitlist for affordable housing in Chatham-Kent, underscoring the ongoing demand for stable housing options.
