Changes have been made to garbage protocols for many rural residents in Chatham-Kent.
Municipal officials say as of January 1, 2025 all former transfer stations are now known as waste depots and will operate under a new Waste Depot Access Program.
Each home not covered by curbside pickup will receive two access permits for use in different vehicles, allowing disposal of up to six garbage bags per week and unlimited household recycling. Vouchers have also been handed out, three for each quarter of the year, permitting the disposal of one bulk item.
No changes have been made to the eligibility criteria for using municipal depot services. Officials say the access permits will help operators easily identify eligible residents and will limit curbside residents to use only the services for which they are eligible. This means all patrons will be able to dispose of other divertible materials including tires, scrap metal, white goods (appliances), and electronic waste. Non-curbside and curbside residents will still be able to dispose of excess waste at Harwich and Wallaceburg Depots for a fee.
All permits and vouchers under the new program will expire each year on December 31.
