In an effort to make reading and learning barrier-free in the Chatham-Kent community, the local public library is eliminating all fines for overdue books.

The Chatham-Kent Public Library has announced that all adult print materials are now offered with out the penalty of late fines beginning February 1. Previously, overdue fines were only waived on children and teen material.

Library officials said the removal of late charges will increase equitable access to literacy and information in the community.

Adult print materials that will no longer accrue fines include hardcover books, paperback books, graphic novels, book club kits and magazines. Playaways and Books on CD will also be free from late fees.

Borrowed materials are still expected to be returned, as others are often waiting for them. Replacement fees will apply if an item is not returned for an extended period.

Late fines will also still apply to express reads, interlibrary loan materials, DVDs, video games, puzzles, board games, park passes, launchpads and wifi hotspots.
