A Chatham-Kent councillor is bringing in a motion at tonight’s council meeting, to have the municipality put pressure on the federal and provincial governments to improve the Rondeau Park Barrier Beach to help limit damage to municipal property due to wave erosion.
Councillor Anthony Ceccacci, is calling on Chatham-Kent to send a letter to the federal and provincial governments, as well as various ministries to express the importance of the barrier beach structure to Chatham-Kent properties. A proposed letter will also call on the higher level of governments to take the lead on an erosion protection strategy.
The barrier helps to protect farmland, residential and commercial development. It also, according to Ceccacci’s motion, protects marine habitat and recreational water amenities.
There are concerns that if the barrier is lost, there could be damage to local homes and municipal infrastructure due to Lake Erie wave action.
