CK Needs Work to Prevent Future Floods

As water levels on the Thames continue to recede, Mayor Randy Hope says the municipality is looking at ways to prevent events like this in the future.

“We are going to be sitting down with the Lower Thames Valley (Conservation Authority,) they know they need better modeling systems in order to predict this type of weather and the amount of water that’s coming down,” Hope says. “We also need to go back to the drawing board and look at other areas we’ve been talking about for years”

Hope says along with discussing dredging the mouth of the Thames, they’re also going to look at improving drainage, river banks, and tributary drains.

Municipal Affairs Minister Bill Mauro, during a visit to see the flood damage first-hand, says his heart goes out to those who’ve been impacted.

“There are so many people that financially will find themselves in a difficult circumstance,” Mauro says. “There are seniors who don’t have the capacity to deal with the physical issues that are necessary to rehabilitate their homes, and that’s where the small communities really pull together and offer their help.”

Mauro says there are various avenues for help for both local residents and the municipal government, and inspection teams will have a closer look at damage once the flood water has completely receded.
