Residents in Chatham are being urged to scale back their water use for the time being.

According to municipal officials, the Chatham Water Treatment Plant experienced an electrical issue affecting the main power feed early Sunday morning.

Although Response crews were immediately dispatched to assess and diagnose the problem, the backup generator responsible for pumping water to the distribution system also failed, leading to a drop in elevated water tower levels and a temporary reduction in water pressure throughout the distribution system.

The generator issue has been temporarily fixed and water pressure has stabilized. However, officials say they are still working to restore full functionality.

All customers in Chatham are being urged to limit their indoor water usage and hold off on any outdoor watering, including watering lawns, washing vehicles, filling pools or hot tubs, and any outdoor construction that requires water.
