A recent crackdown on drunk drivers resulted in a number of charges being laid.

National Impaired Driving Prevention Week takes place during the third week of March each year. During this year’s campaign, officials with the Chatham-Kent Police Service say officers carried out proactive enforcement and educational initiates aimed at keeping local roads safe.

In all, 13 R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) checkpoints were set up across the municipality with roughly 1000 vehicles stopped.

Authorities say one driver was arrested and charged with impaired driving-related offences, two seven-day license suspensions were handed out, and nine Provincial Offence notices were issued under the Highway Traffic Act.

Police are reminding all motorists that impaired driving continues to be the leading cause of serious injury and death on local roadways. All drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and arrange a few ride home, and anyone who suspects an impaired driver is urged to call 911 immediately.
