Police are warning the public about repeated scam attempts after several Chatham-Kent residents were targeted.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers have responded to four incidents in a 24-hour period where victims were called by someone posing as a bail bondsman.
In each instance, the scammers have contacted residents, claiming their grandchild is in jail and demanding money for their release. The victims are then instructed to give the cash to a courier who will attend their home. To make the transaction seem legitimate, the victims are also provided a code.
Police officials said the community needs to be aware that no Canadian court and no police service will ever engage in this practice. In addition, bail bondsmen do not operate in Canada.
Anyone who receives a similar phone call should not provide any money or personal information, and should instead report the incident to police.
