Several frontline police officers patrolling Chatham-Kent will now be equipped with body-worn cameras.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service said it will phase in the cameras throughout the year, with the first groups of select officers to receive the new policing technology this week. All frontline officers are expected to wear body-worn cameras by the end of 2025.
“The implementation of this technology aims to increase transparency and accountability, enhance officer and public safety, provide objective evidence in police interactions, and strengthen community confidence in law enforcement,” CK police said in a news release.
The cameras will be used during interactions with the public, including traffic stops, calls for service, and enforcement activities. Protocols for the activation, deactivation, and storage of recorded footage have also been established to adhere to privacy regulations and legal standards.
CK officers will receive extensive training on the proper use of the cameras to ensure they understand operational guidelines and best practices.
