Public Transportation in Chatham-Kent is set to receive $977,409 courtesy of the provincial government’s Dedicated Gas Tax Funds for Public Transportation program.
Council voted unanimously for the mayor and clerk to sign for the funds, which go towards operating and capital costs to support local public transportation services and increase ridership.
The municipality has received almost $19 million of these funds since the program’s inception in 2004.
Funding received under this program has been included in the 2025 transit operating budget, with any surplus balance being transferred to the Provincial Gas Tax Reserve Fund to be used for future transit projects.
The amount each Ontario municipality with a public transportation system receives is determined using a formula consisting of ridership, population, and provincial gas tax revenue collected in the previous year.
