In a show of solidarity with the people of Ukraine, the country’s flag is now flying over the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre.
The municipality raised the flag on Tuesday, as Russian soldiers continued to invade and wage war against Ukraine.
“The people of Ukraine have a democratically-elected government and as free people, they have the right to choose their leadership,” said CK Mayor Darrin Canniff, who called on Russia to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Back in July of 2019, the municipality hosted a delegation of 13 mayors from Ukraine, as part of an international study tour organized by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
Canniff said some of those mayors may now be on the front line in Ukraine, fighting for their country.
“My heart goes out to those brave Ukrainians fighting and dying for their homeland and democracy,” he said.
