Local health officials are encouraging the community to take proactive steps and prepare for significant heat events this summer.

Chatham-Kent Public Health said it is important to prepare for extreme heat before it occurs to help protect individuals from the potential risks.

“Preparation is key to staying safe during this upcoming heat season,” said Dr. Shanker Nesathurai, CK’s acting medical officer of health, in a news release. “Extreme heat can pose significant risks, especially for vulnerable groups such as older adults, individuals with chronic conditions, and those experiencing substance use disorder. In times of extreme heat, I encourage everyone to look out for at-risk family and friends.”

Area residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather forecasts and heat advisories, ensure air conditioners are in good working condition, purchase fans, stay hydrated, and buy a wide-brimmed hat made of breathable fabric.

The community is also encouraged to have a plan to check on vulnerable individuals, such as seniors, young children, and those with chronic health conditions.

Cara Robinson, a program manager at CK Public Health, said organizations that support outdoor work should establish extreme heat policies and strategies.

“If you work outdoors or participate in outdoor programming, make sure you understand how your employer or organization plans to address extreme heat,” she said.
