Whether Chatham-Kent will be getting any financial support to help stay afloat during the pandemic remains to be seen.
Mayor Darrin Canniff took part in a conference call with the Premier and other Ontario mayors earlier this week, and says the federal and provincial governments are apparently “working diligently” on funding.
“It’s been emphasized over and over again from all the mayors across Ontario, we need support from the federal and provincial governments to cover off deficits because we can’t run one, we can’t run a deficit,” Canniff says. “It’s pretty critical for municipalities to receive that funding to cover the deficit.”
Chatham-Kent is currently facing an estimated $3.3-million deficit because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Canniff says it could be August before the municipalities hear anything back.
