A local charity is shining a light on the challenges facing the homeless in Chatham-Kent with an upcoming event.

NeighbourLink is holding its sixth annual Coldest Night of the Year event on February 26, in an effort to raise $50,000 to support those who provide essential care and service for people experiencing homelessness.

Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff said groups such as NeighbourLink are part of the fabric of the community.

“We care about each other in Chatham-Kent,” he said in a news release. “Wherever there is a need, someone steps in to fill it.”

The event consists of a five-kilometre walk that can be completed as a group on the day of the event, or separate on any day during the month of February.

So far, 130 walkers have registered for the event and more than 100 have said they will attend the walk in person. As well, pledges have already surpassed $33,000.

The walk will begin at the former St. Agnes School on Croydon Street in Chatham at 4 p.m. on February 26. For more information on the event, click here.
