Following a delay that lasted nearly two years, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent has fired a construction company contracted to build an affordable housing complex in Chatham.
Officials announced on Thursday that the municipality has ended a contract with BECC Construction Inc. for the construction of a three-story, 27-unit housing complex at 101 McNaughton Avenue West.
BECC was tasked with both the design and construction of the modular building, with factory-built units shipped to the project site for assembly on a foundation.
The project was originally scheduled to be ready for occupancy by early 2023 but the municipality said BECC has not met its contractual obligations. Further information as to what caused the construction delay has not been released.
The municipality said it is committed to resuming construction on the housing complex in the coming months under the direction of a new company. The new contractor will be selected through an RFP process and the successful bidder will then present a revised timeline to CK administration to complete the complex.
