The Municipality wants to make sure local voices are heard when it comes to rural school closures.
Councillor Carmen McGregor says while jurisdictional issues are at play, there is still a lot local officials can do.
“Council has absolutely no authority over the decisions they make any more than they have authority over the decisions we make,” the Wallaceburg representative says. “I think as Councillors we can certainly support the efforts and help point out to the province how that can affect a small community, it can devastate a small community to lose a high school.”
Several schools in Chatham-Kent are at risk of being closed or consolidated as enrollment numbers continue to fall.
Council plans to lobby the provincial government to support the smaller communities on the overall impact of school closures.
